In the photo shown, a neonatal nurse is feeding an infant in the NICU. He was in the third level of the NICU. Although he wasn’t premature, he did have some severe complications. His mother had gestational diabetes, once the cord was cut, the infant’s blood dropped quickly therefore his body couldn’t regulate his blood sugar on his own. The nurses noticed he wasn’t eating so they began to feed him through a tube until he could eat on his own. The infant was also having trouble breathing thus needing to put a breathing tube on him also. A neonatal nurse is responsible for total care of healthy infants or infants who may be diagnosed with congenital defects, delivery complications, or most often, prematurity. They might be required to work days, evenings, nights, or a combination of all three. Working weekends, holidays, and overtime is also expected as part of the job, as the facility is open 24 hours a day, and every day of the week. Advanced neonatal nurse practitioners work primarily during the day, but their presence and expertise may be required at any time in the day. Accomplishing their duties are very important during their jobs, if not completed a patient could be severely hurt or die and the nurse could lose his or her job. For example they need to provide information and support to the patient’s family,they will inform the family with the infants postpartum, neonatal, and intensive care. Monitoring specialized equipment such as incubators or ventilators, and dispensing medications is also an important part of their job. Another duty that must be done is performing diagnostic tests or other procedures which can be intubation or blood draws, and they also need to give the proper feeding and basic care. It is essential that Neonatal nurses are skilled observers of infant behaviors and must know how illnesses affect patients as well as their
