Nursing has many different specialties. The specialty I am most excited for is neonatal. Neonatal nurses work with the newborn babies, otherwise known as neonates. There are different types of nurses for different types of care the babies may need. Premature infants may need a certain type of nurse, while other infants may be fine without the critical care. Like adults, babies need to be cared for and need to be assessed very carefully. Working with babies has been my passion for as long as I can remember, and I am excited to be able to explain my views of neonatal.

They are pinned to their little bed by gravity, deprived of their usual reassuring gestures (sucking their thumb, playing with their umbilical cord, placenta, or feet, masturbating, or swallowing amniotic liquid) because of their lack of motor coordination. They have lost their freedom and any kind of potential initiative; they are now submissive and become passive. Many of them escape into their own world and anesthetize their perceptions; they dissociate themselves, which later on will influence their way of living. I am often brought newborns, just come out of neonatal services, who are suffering from what I call the “Sleeping Beauty syndrome.” They are passive, waiting to be animated, to be brought back to life. I can’t wait to see a sick neonate transform into a strong baby. I will be seen as a hero to those families for saving their babies life, and they will be my little heroes for showing me strength does not come in age, but is unique to every individual. So when people ask me, “why or how can you be a neonatal nurse?” I will answer them by explaining to them it is so much more to me than changing a babies diaper and rocking them to sleep.
