Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Summary

A (NICU) neonatal intensive-care unit, or also known as a (ICN) intensive care nursery, is an intensive-care unit specializing in the care of sick or premature newborn babies. These babies and families are completely unprepared for the serious and life-threating challenges ahead of them in the neonatal intensive care unit. Families need a strong back bone of doctors and nurses to help them through the emotional experience, yet most doctors and nurses have nearly no education in handling these situations. In this article, Ross focuses on a study that researched the difference in neonatology doctors and nurses after an intensive communication training that educates the professionals in understanding and communicating with the families of intensive care patients. Neonatal doctors and nursing have an ethical and professional duty to guide families through the frightening situations that occur in the intensive-care unit. Though the professionals have this duty they are very rarely educated in handled the fearful parents. The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education and the National Organization of Nurse Practitioners Faculties confirm that these doctors and nurses are not trained properly for these situations. NC3 is a 3-day training that focuses on neonatal fellows and teaches communication skills directed towards giving bad news to families, setting goals for the babies and families, and addressing problems with the babies’ health. NC3 involved three types of educating activities which were practical dialect overview, small-group sessions, and informal practice exercise.
