Neolithic Food Disadvantages

The ability for early species to cultivate their own food was a development with both advantages and disadvantages. By growing their own crops early humans could be in control of their own food stock. They could plant many crops if they wanted to grow a surplus of food, or choose to farm a minimum number of crops and rely on an alternate food such as herd animals or marine ecosystems instead. This gave people the flexibility to do as they please, instead of having to rely on what untamed nature produced itself. Being in control of our own food is a disadvantage as well, if weather or soil doesn’t permit plentiful crops that season, the people who rely on that crop could potentially starve. Being able to establish permanent civilizations would lead to many technological advantages that may not have occurred for nomads. Also, unless they over used resources, there was a higher chance of having a stable income of food in a permanent civilization rather than wandering until food was located. As a nomad, there was no guarantee food would be found in time to meet their needs. Also, the quality of live improved with the beginning of Neolithic food producers. They could make themselves comfortable in permanent areas, and enjoy where they lived making the civilizations fit to their needs as we see later in Incan or Mayan civilizations where they had intricate buildings for stargazing and community events. The start of permanent food producing would lead to the permanent societies and technology we have today. The world benefitted from this as it is what lead to modern technology and the idea of “home” which is associated with memoires and feelings. People still have the ability to travel and see the world as gatherers did as well, but we have the confidence in our food supply now thanks to
