Jean Charest was a Quebec Premier who was a neoliberalist who tried to increase the tuition for universities in Quebec from $2,168 to $3,793 in a span of five years. The students did not agree with this and went on a massive strike that lasted around 6 months and managed to have to prevent the tuition from rising during the period due to having a more social democratic stance. The students believed that it should be a right to enter educational institution especially at their age when entering cegept and university, as they are most self-actualized and mature than when they were at high school and elementary, so increasing the price of tuition would hinder their entry to become a young working class citizen. However, the government believes that post-secondary education is more of an entitlement that students should more pay for the public services in favor of reducing the federal tax of the province to better spend their budget elsewhere. This shows a part of the class between the government and students, where one side is leaning towards a Neoliberalism view where educational tuition a social service should get taxed more in favor of reducing overall federal tax. This shows hints that the government would treat students as an economic unit working to pay in the economy while blocking a path for students to study to get a career that is in their preference, rather one to work just to make more income. The students believe this in a way dehumanizes them and due to trying to block an entry for a more accessible education, the government is trying to build competition between students to get work way harder and quicker than they
