After Mandela was sentenced to prison he wanted to make prisons an educational citadel. The center figured in organizing political education classes. The education classes gave hope to all the prisoners. F.W. de Klerk overturned many laws that favored apartheid. He released many black leaders, prisoners convicted in the Rivonia Trail, and lifted the ban on ANC. On February 11, 1990 Mandela was set free after 27 years behind bars. After Mandela's release, he became the president of ANC. On September 26,1992 de Klerk signed the Record of Understanding which freely elected the members of the constitutional assembly. This assembly was a transitional legislature and drafted a new constitution. In 1993 Mandela and de Klerk won the Nobel Peace Prize for their work on human rights. ("Mandela, Nelson") On June 3,1993 they opened up the election to all South African citizens. On April 27,1994 South Africa held the first ever free election for all citizens. After Mandela won the election he became the first democratic president in South Africa. Mandela's philosophy for leaders was " Real leaders identify those good men and women, black or white, no matter their attitudes toward you, and find a way to contribute to society."
