It is unknown how he died, but Mandela thought it was because of a lung disease. Mandela did not remember feeling much grief about this incident. Instead he felt “cut adrift”.
After a brief period of time, Mandela’s mom took him to a new village that “far exceeded” anything he had ever seen. It had large houses, gardens, and it was surrounded by trees. Mandela soon adapted to the everyday life in Thembuland. When he was not in school, he was working as a shepherd, plough boy, or a wagon guide. Although he missed his family and Qunu, he was “completely absorbed” in his new world.
