Nelson Mandela was the first ever south african activist, he was aswell a former president from 1918 till 2013 he was one of the men who brought an end to apartheid as well a global supporter for human rights his decisions for fighting for what he believed was right landed him in prison for nearly three decades. He suddenly became an idol and was made the face to the anti apartheid movement within his country and internationally. He was released in 1990. He became the first black president in south africa in 1994. He retired from politics in 1999. He stayed a very loyal champion for his nation and everywhere around the world until his death. He died in 2013 at the age of 95. Nelson Mandela was born into a royal family he was born on july 18, 1918. Nelsons family was from tembu tribe in south africa village in mvezo, his father gadla henry mphakanyiswa was a chief in mvezo He had nine daughters and four sons. after his father past in 1927 mandela was only 9 years old at the time. mandela joined the african national congress (ANC) in 1994. He worked with party members, oliver tambo, to set up a youth league. the same year mandela met his first wife her name was evelyn ntoko mase, he had four children with evelyn but then had a divorce in 1957. Nelson spent his first 18 years of his 27 years in prison, brutal robben island prison. He was given a small confined cell without bed or plumbing as well as hard labor. He was given fewer privileges than other inmates seeing that he was a block political prisoner. He was visited by his second wife winnie madikizela mandela only, law would not let any other visitors visit
