Nelson Mandela was born 18th July 1918 in Mvezo on the east coast of South Africa. His father named him Rolihlahla which means troublemaker. He grew up in an african society, unchanged for hundreds of years. He spent his early childhood in a neighbouring village, where his mother came from. He didn't grow up amongst whites and felt the feeling of inferiority that many africans do. He was just seven when this “white world” had an great impact on him, his black village teacher decided he needed a better suited name for the white society, so he called him Nelson. The campaign spread fast across the black community from city to city, many africans took political actions for the first time in their lives and disobeyed the apartheid laws. Mandela who organized the campaign was known across the country for the success of the campaign. By 1952 the government had enough of Mandela, so they served him a banning order which reduced his freedom of speech, he could not be a part of public meetings or speak to more than one person at the time. So Mandela had to continue the fight behind the scenes. He and his friend Oliver Tambo opened the only black law firm in South Africa. Many black people came to the law firm with legal problems because it was the only place they could go. The government brutally expanded apartheid, forcing communities out of their homes sometimes at gunpoint but as the repression increased, so did Mandela's will. Every day of his life he fighted aparteid in every way he could, his whole life has been consumed with the struggle. In december 1956 the state finally made its move by arresting Mandela and 155 other activists and charged them with high treason. This was more than his wife Evelyn could bear so after 12 years of marriage she left him. Mandela stood trial for treason and it would take four years before he was found not guilty. He received military training and at an age of 43 he felt free for the first time in his life, but he would return home to continue the fight. Mandela was captured by the police and sentenced to five years in prison for leaving the country illegally. While he was in prison the military high command of Mandela’s campaign was captured, charged with sabotage and conspiracy to overthrow the government. Mandela was brought to stand trial with him where he said the famous line: “I have fought against white domination, i have fought against black domination, I have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society in with all persons live together in harmony and equal opportunities. It is an ideal for which i hope to live for and achieve, but if needed it is an ideal which I am prepared to die” these were the last words he would speak in public for nearly 30
