Nelle Harper Lee was the youngest of four children. She was a tomboy who lived in a small town. Her father was a lawyer, a member of the AL State Legislative and owned part of a newspaper. Her mother rarely left the house. Her mother was mentally ill and some have said to have been bi-polar. Nelle Harper Lee was a tomboy, and was said to be tougher than most boys her age. She was a protector of her close friend Truman Capote who was picked on for being sensitive and the fancy clothes that he wore. He later became a writer known as Truman Persons. In high school, she became interested in English Literature. She went on to college, studied Law and worked as a writer for the school magazine Rammer Jammer. She later became the editor of the magazine. The demands of her Law studies forced her to leave her job as the editor. She later went to Oxford as an exchange student. It is about the racial injustice of a small town in Alabama. This book is important because it gave a real description of how people were treated in the south. It gives lessons of forgiveness, standing up for what is right and shows how destructive racism can be. Her second piece Go Set a Watch Man is also about racism. It is like a continuing part of To Kill a Mockingbird. The same characters and theme. The character in Go Set a Watch Man has moved and became educated in the north. She returns home to the south for a vacation and discovers that the racism has grown stronger in the south and the hypocrisy of close friends and family.
