Neil Gaiman's Fat Charlie

Decent Essays
I don’t really read much, but I have to admit when I looked at the list of book options you had given us I thought to myself “Which one of these descriptions would be a movie worth watching?” and automatically I had the urge to read this book (or maybe talk a producer into making this into a movie). It could have been the goofy names or the fact that their dad was a god that got my attention, but I definitely thank my instincts on picking this book to read. I really did like this book. It was very thorough for a four hundred page book. I enjoyed it a lot because from the beginning Fat Charlie(who isn’t fat) doesn’t like his father even though he is a god. Yes, his father makes fun of him and definitely isn't the best father out there, but I was very surprised about how even after a decade of being away from his father and having no contact with him he still disliked him. Charlie gets much misfortune in this and that is linked to his “bad luck” he talks about in the beginning of the book and Neil Gaiman only shows us that …show more content…
I really do not believe he went wrong anywhere in this novel on making it interesting and relatable. I related to Charlie because my brother and I also have problems. Maybe not as intense as Charlie’s and Spiders, but we do have our ups and downs. Also, I think everyone at one point in their life has been embarrassed by their parents. Either by calling you a weird nickname in front of your friends or just their presence alone.
I did not look at this as a myth-based novel at all. Yes, it included myths in it, but it also included comedy, humor, horror, family, magic, and thrill. I felt like I read multiple stories all combined into one and I believe that’s what made it great. I definitely don’t regret choosing this

The figurative language deepens the book, and the style and craft drags the reader farther into it. The central idea of the book is well chose and described. The only thing that could have been improved is the figurative language. There is so much figurative language at certain parts that many readers do not may have trouble understanding it. Even with the confusing parts this book deserves a four out of five stars, because it is intriguing, but still has flaws.…

I agree with you when you said that mythology has exercised an enormous influence on the culture of Western civilization. We can see myth related stories almost every day in books, movies, and even video games. There is a video game I played a couple of years ago called God of War. It’s a game based on Greek mythology. The story line, characters, and images used in it was incredible.…

In modern day terms a myth holds a negative connotation, however in the times of Ancient Greece myths told were largely believed. As with any other ancient culture the Greeks used mythology to explain the environment of which mankind lived, how the night changed from light to dark, the seasons and all other natural phenomena’s. Myths were also used to recount historical events so that people could connect with their ancestors, the wars they were in and the places they had been. Without widespread literacy skills the communication/ passing on of myths was done orally. With myths being told across a large period of time, myths became ever changing, oral bards were adapting myths to please audiences, sometimes incorporating local events to gain…

Myths, and the study of myths, are very misunderstood to the common mind. I have asked a few people what they define a myth to be. I have found a few answers that stood out. I have found that some people correspond myths with the paranormal or urban legend, others with a fictional story; however the most outstanding answer that I received was that a myth was something that is untrue, that society wants us to believe The proper usage of “myth” is up for argument, but the meaning on the actual word is not.…
