Neil Gaiman is an English writer of short fiction, novels, and comic books. Born in Port Chester, Hampshire, England, Gaiman was raised under the church of scientology although his grandfather was of Polish-Jewish descent. His life-long love for literature began at the age of four when he first learned to read. He excelled in school not because he was genius but because he would often read the books his teachers gave him as soon as they were handed out. At the age of seven, he received the Lord of the Rings as a gift, which had an early influence on his dreams of becoming a writer. As a child, he would ask his parents to drop him off at libraries on their way to work. Gaiman credits his passion for reading and writing to librarians explaining, “I wouldn’t be who I am without libraries.” …show more content…
In 1984, he wrote his first book a biography of the band Duran Duran. Two years later, he wrote his most famous graphic novel The Sandman leading to him being hired to write Swamp Thing for DC comics in 1990. Since then, he has written numerous bestselling novels, he wrote the BBC TV show Neverwhere as well as a Doctor Who episode in 2009.
Among his most important influences is the Chronicles of Narnia. In a speech he gave as the guest of honor of the Mythopoetic Society in 2012, he remarked that he was fascinated to discover “how much of the Narnia books had crept inside me: As I would write, there would be moment after moment of realizing that I’d borrowed phrases, rhythms, the way that words were put together; for example, that I had a hedgehog and a hare, in “the books of magic, speaking and agreeing with each other much as the Dufflepuds
