I am writing this letter on behalf of Neil Chappell, MD, in order to convey my strong support of his grant proposal entitled, “Hyperandrogenemia alters ovarian mitochondrial function and subsequent oogenesis and embryo development in a PCOS mouse model.” As his mentor and principal investigator, I am committed to the development of his career, and will assist him in any way I can to ensure his success in all professional endeavors. To date, Dr. Chappell has accomplished many significant achievements, and I believe in his capacity to continue to grow as a clinician scientist to become a prestigious example in this field as a well-respected independent researcher.
Dr. Chappell completed his medical school training at University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, and subsequently completed a four year residency program in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. During his training, he regularly received awards and recognition for his academic achievements. While in medical school, he illustrated robust interest in the field of reproductive endocrinology, earning the Outstanding Medical Student in Obstetrics and Gynecology and the National Endocrine Society Medical Student Achievement Award. Chappell as his mentor in his research project on the role of androgens on the mitochondria and subsequent oocyte and embryo development. It is an area of science that warrants much study, with vast implications to expand our knowledge, not only of basic ovarian physiology, but also of the many phenotypic presentations of polycystic ovary syndrome. With his career plan in place, Dr. Chappell stands to become an expert in this realm, and has the resources available to him to better illuminate the finer points of this disease, and thus cultivate novel treatment paradigms that are better suited to this complex
