Did you know that an American was the first person to walk on the moon? This was only less than 50 years ago. This American’s name was Neil Armstrong. He is one of the most famous astronauts in the world. Neil Armstrong is one of only 12 people to have ever walked on the moon.
Neil Armstrong was born on August 5, 1930 in Auglaize County in Ohio, his parents were Stephen Koenig Armstrong and Viola Louise Engel and he had two younger siblings Dean and June. Neil’s dad worked as an auditor for the state government of Ohio so his family moved around the state living in 20 towns. He received a full U.S. Navy scholarship through the Halloway Plan. He studied at Purdue for 2 years, then took flight classes for one year, and finally had one year of Naval service. When he was 18, his studies were interrupted when he was called to serve in the Navy. He reported to the Naval Air Station Pensacola for flight training. At the age of 20, Neil Armstrong became a fully qualified Naval Aviator and was assigned to the Fleet Aircraft Service Squadron 7 at NAS San Diego. Armstrong was chosen as the commander of the Apollo 11 mission. On July 16, 1969, the three astronauts were launched into space. Four days later, Armstrong piloted the Lunar Module to the moon’s surface, along with Buzz Aldrin. On July 20, 1969 at 10:56 PM, Neil Armstrong stepped on the moon’s surface. He was the first man to walk on the moon. At that time, he made the famous statement, “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.” While on the moon Armstrong and Aldrin did experiments and picked up lunar
