Navy scholarship. In 1949 his studies were interrupted by the Korean War and he was drafted. During the war Neil was a U.S. Navy pilot and flew 78 combat missions. He left the service in 1952 at age 22. When he returned he completed his degree and a few years later he joined NASA. NASA (National Aeronautics Space Agency) is the American (U.S.A.) Space HQ. When Neil joined NASA he was a test pilot and engineer. He even tested the X-15 which could reach speeds of up to 4,000 mph. Neil Armstrong married Janet Shearon on January 28th 1956 and had two kids. One boy and a girl. The girl’s name was Karen Armstrong and the boy’s name was Eric Armstrong. Karen died early because of an inoperable brain tumor in January 1962.
