In 1968, Armstrong almost encountered death. “[He] was onboard an unwieldy lunar landing module when it crashed; he ejected only seconds before it hit the ground then calmly returned to work” (Newsmakers). Armstrong first joined NASA in 1955, back when it was titled NACA (National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics). There he had the role of taking on many jobs. He worked as an engineer, administrator, astronaut, and test pilot (Dunbar). Armstrong was well known for having a lot on his plate and being able to handle it well and remain calm. He was congratulated by President Barack Obama for being “…among the greatest of American heroes - not just of his time but of all time.” Neil also gained the recognition of being the first to land the Eagle module on the moon and walk on its surface. “Apollo was the greatest of human achievements [and] for once, we reached beyond our grasp” said professor Brian Cox.
