Comedy movies are a go-to to many people; if you are looking to crack a smile just search for a comedy movie and done. However, movies are categorized on genres; movies are not typically the same. They share the same genre values with the filmmakers. For instance, look at John Carpenter’s Halloween. By the time this film came out audiences knew what to expect when seeing this. This movie would surly have blood, suspenseful moments, and an emotional undertow; it did not disappoint. Maz Jobrani is an Iranian-American, also known as the Persian Pink Panther. Last week his latest stand-up movie was added to Netflix's comedy lineup. Stand-up comedy is an art that is now much more appreciated than what it was in the times of Eddie Murphy and Steve Harvey. Today's comedian's, like Kevin Hart, have brought comedy into a new realm and have introduced laughter to a larger audience. Netflix advocates stand-up and adds stand-up comedy to its lineup every few months or so.…

I believe comedy changes with time. What was found funny at one point of time might not be seen as funny during different times. Comedy had to adapt with the new era and continue to evolve in order to be successful. I also thing that different class of society prefers different genres of comedy. For instance upper class society might enjoy the late night satire comedy shows and the lower class society might enjoy a comedy movie instead of a…

A novel that is the completely opposite in its portrayal of an accurate depiction of history than The Killer Angeles, is the novel Gone with the Wind. As I have explained, The Killer Angels which later was turned into a film almost twenty years later has continued to receive praise. When either the novel or film is mentioned, it is usually followed by a positive narrative. That is something that cannot be said for Gone with the Wind. Gone with the Wind which was also later turned into a film with the same name, has not seen the same successful criticism it had when it first was made (both novel and film).…

Following the introduction of sound in the late 1920’s, the film industry flourished, and multiple genres took their place in the forefront of the industry, including gangster, horror, and western films (Dixon & Foster 90-91). One genre of film that started in the early 1930s and became popular until the late 1940s was the “screwball comedy”, which contained elements consisting of comedy and romance (Dixon & Foster 99-100). It was “characterized by social satire, comedic relief through zany, fast-paced and unusual events, and precisely-timed, fast-paced verbal dueling and witty sarcastic dialogue…” (Comedy 1). This genre was also very prevalent at the time because it provided comedic relief, but it also had the theme of love, in which usually…

Preston Sturges's classic 1941 film, Sullivan's Travels, has an insurmountably clear message: An entertaining, comedic film is worth far more to the common man than an educational, "meaningful" film. This point is made in no uncertain terms, considering how Sullivan (Joel McCrea), the titular character, lays the moral in so many words, stating that laughter is "all some people have." However, the movie also includes a far subtler idea considering filmmaking, that being the polarization between the fun, entertaining movie and the artsy, meaningful film. Moreover, this deeper message is made through subtler methods, particularly with the use of sound, editing, cinematography, and mise-en-scene.…

Natural born Killers shows us to see the other side of the coin. Our humanness, and what is naturalized in killing, is more human than natural. To be human is to step apart and outside nature. We, humans, distinguish ourselves as more than nature. Somehow more conscious or self-aware in such a way that we can reject our basic foundations of our own absurdity.…

Comedies often provide laughter and entertainment while presenting social, political, philosophical, and theological ideas and problems. Within the comedy genre, satire presents itself in a form of sarcasm, irony and humor. It is the combination of entertainment and critique to criticize the ignorance of a person or society. It has a few elements: entertainment and critical reflection to awaken the audience and to address issues and questions. It does not seek to do harm, but it seeks the truth and its purpose is to create a reform (a change or improvement).…

One of modern society’s favourite pastimes is watching and comparing films. Films have the ability to make us laugh, cry, or even think while touching our hearts no matter what the genre is. Contemporary media genres have dramatically changed since classical literary times, which divided theatrical and literature into groups of drama and comedy, giving birth to genres. Films have become difficult to place into a specific genre, as “any theme may appear in any genre” (Chandler 1997, p. 1) resulting in genres blending continuously. For example, a Science Fiction (Sci-Fi) film is classified in that genre due to its situational context and fundamental plot, though, Sci-Fi films may also be categorised into genres such as horror (Aliens), comedy…

The Romantic Comedy genre is one of the most popular yet overlooked genre in the film industry. The cheesy dialogues, witty behavior, sexual tension, heart melting monologues and the friction between the main two characters in a romantic comedy film, is what makes this genre so loved and cherished. According to most people, the romantic comedies are viewed as ‘guilty pleasures’. In his book Boy Meets Girl Meets Genre, Jeffers McDonald disagrees with that statement by saying that “the appeal to audiences of such films in more complex, especially if the viewer inhabits a position where conflicting pulls of realism and fantasy operating” (McDonald 2007).…

The biggest beneficiary of this research is the content makers. Those that produce and work on the shows people are watching benefit the most since, with this information, they can broaden their target audience. Interestingly, there are some shows like “Bones” and “House” that have no specific personality type that prefers them (Bulik). One hypothesis for this is that those shows target such a large audience that there’s no discernable difference between viewers types. Both of those shows have some of the largest viewership of recent shows on television.…

Many critics, dramatists, and readers alike usually consider tragedy to be superior to comedy. I agree and believe that these people are correct. Comedy does attract a large field of viewers and of a much younger and older age but the tragedy affects many more people. The tragedy gives a person a suspense that they usually cannot get from the comedy. The tragedy can be about something that is unrealistic or something in the future with a major event and a major plot.…
