When I moved out to Pittsburgh, I was living in the crowded Southside of Pittsburgh. It was a great city neighborhood, with a lot of bars, and loud music that played almost every night. At the problem-solving phase, I started searching to purchase a single home, in a nice quiet area, that had a garage, dishwasher, fireplace and a driveway; that was away from the proximity of city life. Understanding it was a high involvement purchase and there was going to a lot of research going into the purchase. The informational gathering phase was largely spent acquiring information about potential neighborhoods by researching crime rates, school districts and population in a neighborhood from internet searching and discussing with friends the potential

It was surprisingly difficult finding information on the Memorial Super-Neighborhood. A “city-within-a-city” located along I-10 and beltway 8, Memorial can boast premier office space, upscale homes, and luxury hotels. The median household income is $208,000. It has a booming economy, excellent schools, great shopping, and is home to the Texas Medical Center (Air Liquide USA LLC; Air Liquide to Relocate American Corporate Headquarters to Memorial City in Houston). It’s all in the name, I guess; when you name something Memorial, most of what comes up is memorials to some cause or another, some date or individual.…

Both residential and industrial vacant properties contribute to the number of idling space and unnecessary expenditure, which contribute to a real or perceived environmental contamination to its neighbors and community. As long as a property remains vacant, the greater its impact on surrounding properties and communities in a larger radius effect. Vacant properties and neighborhood blight are more than just an indication of greater financial forces at work in the community. For their association can result to amplified risk to health and welfare, reduce property values, contribute to public regression and disinvestment, higher insurance premiums for homeowners and renters, higher crimes, and decrease tax revenue for its citizen’s much needed…

This all comes back to individualism because when we got to suburbia no one came over to introduce themselves. We had to catch them in their yard or on a walk to introduce ourselves to the sub district. When we finally started to talk to them we found ourselves not belonging to their cliché. We found ourselves building a reputation as snobby perfectionist and…

I conducted my windshield survey in Clinton Township, MI. While driving I noticed a good amount of people running and riding their bikes on the trail that leads to metro beach. Nearby were quite a few medical buildings; these findings make me believe that health is an important factor for the community. The roads are decent with a few pot holes. There was a lot of traffic on metro parkway (at 3:30pm); this gives me insight that this community is a working community.…

The location has meaning, and is an essential part of the character’s lives from start to finish. In Chapter 2 of “The Urban Prospect,” the author, Mumford, address this type of phenomenon with the subject of “Planning for the Phases of Life.” Paraphrasing the chapter, neighborhoods need to plan and provide for each life stage, from early childhood, through adulthood, and into one’s elderly years. This allows for attachment to the neighborhood and the formation of social bonds throughout one’s lifespan…

Neighborhood Comparison While the identity of people used to be assigned it is now something that you make yourself or select (Howard). I chose two neighborhoods that I believe would differ greatly in income levels and also would differ a little bit in race. I thought it would be extremely interesting if I was to observe a multitude of extreme differences in these two neighborhoods due to the fact that they are less than a mile apart from each other. I already had some sort of knowledge of the two neighborhoods.…

Overall, the neighborhoods I have chosen; Bedford Stuyvesant and Borough Park are similar in size, income, occupational level, and crime rates. In my opinion these two neighborhoods are similar in many aspects that I never thought were true due to my own understandings. In class we have discussed and read many readings about different neighborhoods and the reason they are in poverty due to the race of the majority. Since Borough Park is a predominantly white neighborhood I thought it would be a great neighborhood with a huge income being obtained by families and crime rates to be little to none. Compared to Bedford Stuyvesant these two neighborhoods are not so much different like I thought.…

The topic that is widely discussed in big cities is gentrification. When my peers were asked, what they defined gentrification as, they described it as “rich people coming into cheaper neighborhoods.” According to their definition, gentrification has not been a positive effect to the majority, the lower classes. Gentrification is the occurrence when wealthy classes come into affordable neighborhood. As a result, this usually raises prices as store and homeowners see an opportunity to gain more money.…
