Nehemiah was considered a great leader, and decided with the help of the Lord to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem. Once Nehemiah set his heart to help the people of Jerusalem, many obstacles were faced. Nehemiah through faith and perseverance proved to be a great leader. Nehemiah served as a cupbearer for the king of Babylon. When Nehemiah heard that the walls of Jerusalem were never rebuilt and the city was going through turmoil, Nehemiah felt obliged to help his people out. Nehemiah asked king Artaxerxes if he could go and help rebuild the walls of Jerusalem. Nehemiah communicated to the king his desire to help Jerusalem and picked a certain day to ask for help. “O Lord, I beseech thee, let now thine ear be attentive to the prayer of thy servant, and to the prayer of thy servants, who desire to fear thy name: and prosper, I pray thee, thy servant this day, and grant him mercy in the sight of this man. For I was the king’s cupbearer” (Nehemiah 1:11, KJV). Due to Nehemiah’s impeccable timing and great communication skills the king granted him permission to go to Jerusalem to help, and gave him a note to avoid dangers. Once Nehemiah arrived he studied the people of Jerusalem and timed the situation right to communicate with them. He waited and identified with the people and proceeded to say, “Then said I unto them, Ye see the distress that we are in, how Jerusalem lieth waste, and the gates thereof are burned with fire: come, and let us build up the wall of Jerusalem, that we be no more reproach” (Nehemiah 2:17, KJV).
