The Atlantic Ocean was a major way to transport and trade slaves. A majority of the slaves were shipped to the New World. These were slaves from the coast of West Africa. Robbed of everything they were accustomed to, their recording stories through music and rituals is what was brought with them. When working in the fields of tobacco in Virginia, slaves were forbidden to communicate with one another. Their African tradition of singing came in handy. They used song to communicate with one another without their masters catching on.
