In this negotiation one of the barriers is the system and not knowing 100% what the system is doing on the vendor side. However, I was thoroughly prepared and knew the situation well from our standpoint. Going into the negotiation, one technique that I use often is non-verbal communications. I remain observant throughout and ensure to identify the vendor’s non-verbal cues (Uribe, 2010), as well as ensure that I’m utilizing non-verbal cues. By recognizing the other parties’ reactions, it allows me to understand how comfortable they are with what I am presenting (Uribe, 2010). The non-verbal cues could consist of acknowledgement through a nod, facial expressions, even tone and gestures through my body language. Misunderstandings in communication are a very common cause of failures in an organization. For communication to be good, we must work to recognize the obstacles that interfere with the exchange of information, and to work to communicate with clarity and precision.
