According to USDHHS 2013, emotional neglect refers to the failure to provide adequate nurturance and emotional support. As consequence, a child can suffer from certain forms of behavior disorder. The child with emotional neglect show high incident of personal and social problem such as: less securely attached to their parents. Poor attachment can significantly affect the relationships that people have throughout their lives, including how they interact with their own children later on. They are less intimate with peers and more aggressive, angry. They tend to have lower self-esteem and perform poorly in school. Less interaction with peers can lead to the delay in speech and low number of vocabulary. Back to the case of Genie, the wild child. She could barely speak at age of 13 and later, no matter how much help she received from doctors and social workers, she still had difficulty in expressing herself or recall her memory. The first years of a child's life have a big impact on how their brain develops. That is why neglect can be so damaging – a child's experiences can change their thought processes and neural pathways. In particular, f a baby is malnourished, neural cells can become weak or damaged and this can cause lowered brain function. Neglect can severely alter the way a child's brain works. This can lead to an increased risk of depression in later life as well as dissociative disorders and memory impairments.
