Sometimes being immersed in a different culture can create misunderstandings between the traveler and the host community. For example, in some cultures it is rude to shake hands or look people in the eyes, so if the traveler is unaware of this and does these things he or she may accidentally insult or disrespect the locals with whom he or she is interacting. Tourism can cause other problems as well. Tourists are known to be targets for crime due to their unfamiliarity with the area. Crime rates may increase during busy tourism seasons and this can cause troubles for the host community and citizens because it makes the area look unsafe. If people think an area is unsafe they are not as likely to travel there, which can then lead to a reduced income for businesses that count on tourists. Tourists have a tendency to spend a little more freely while on vacation, and while the income does help it can also hurt too. Sometimes tourists have such a high demand for resources, which in turn causes prices to increase and this has a negative impact on the locals. Tourists may be able to spend a little extra on the essentials since it is vacation, but when locals are constantly being charged high prices to keep up with the demands of the tourists it can hurt them financially and eventually they might not be able to afford certain things and may not even be able to afford to live in the area after a while.
