Globalisation can be described as “a complex phenomenon; it is the interactive co-evolution of millions of technological, cultural, economic, social and environmental trends at all conceivable spatiotemporal scales.” (Rennen, Martens, 2003: 137). Globalisation is a process which involves the international movement of goods, services, money and ideas around the world. It has been argued that globalisation has many consequences, both positive and negative, for developing countries. A lot of the MNE’s that set up in developing countries are reliant on fossil fuels. Greenhouse emissions caused by the heavy reliance of fossil fuels have put the environment and planet under threat; the industrialisation of developing countries is partly to blame. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (cited in Taplin, 2004) explains there are people in both developed and developing countries who will suffer loss, but losses will be more distinct for people in poorer socioeconomic situations and who are otherwise exposed climatically. “China opens one new coal-fired power plant every week” (Huwart and Verdier, 2013) to appease its need for energy. Coal is the cheapest and most plentiful fossil fuel, it unfortunately happens to be one of the most polluting. Globalisation is an ally of the chainsaw, it encourages deforestation. Clearing forests reduce the amount of CO2 that can be converted into oxygen. Therefore, the volume of CO2 in the atmosphere increases and consequently adds to the greenhouse effect. The developing countries are the most affected by global warming. “Some 1.8 billion people could lack water in the next 70 years. Central Asia, northern China and the Andes are particularly at risk.” (Huwart and Verdier, 2013, p.114).
