Speaking with a local foreign language teacher, Kathleen Mahoney, she explained that even though the teacher may want to teach and has great enthusiasm, students will not always have the same optimistic opinion on the situation. There is no way to completely control everything the pupils do and their attitudes (Mahoney). Through “patience, empathy, and a love of the subject”, you can positively influence each individual learner. Mahoney also explained to me that for the students to learn and appreciate the language or information being taught, that is the greatest satisfaction available to a teacher. All things considered, there are those who were “born to be teachers”, or have attained the nature of educator through years of erudition (Mahoney). For the “natural-born teachers”, the administrative and housekeeping tasks are outweighed in worth by the valuable instruction of a world understanding and education (Mahoney). Grading papers, communicating with teachers and administrators, and planning lessons can be tedious, especially in a foreign language class where each period may be at a different level of comprehension (U.S. Dept. of Labor). Being able to assess students’ abilities, strengths and weaknesses, and challenge them is imperative to the success of each individual (U.S. Dept. of Labor). To sum it up, the hours spent outside of school doing these things could be better spent learning how to better teach students or reading interesting topics to talk about in class in the language being taught (Mahoney). In contrast, the time that is used beneficially is more significant and compensates for the time lost
