The factor I find to be the most influential in shaping the future of religion in America is the role of media. I feel that in America today media drives everything, it is everywhere. The ease of access with today’s technology makes media, in my opinion, the single most influential thing in our society. With the quick access we have to social media, written media, news, videos and all forms of media we are constantly connected. Religion has used media to its fullest extent and will continue to do so. Media has been the wide receiver to the quarterback of religion. Without media where would religion be right now? Prior years Starbucks apparently had Merry Christmas on their cups. Christmas seems to hold a special place with the Christian public and they like to keep their holiday traditions in the public. Anyways, there has been an uproar by the Christian community that the Starbucks Corporation has removed “Merry Christmas” from their cups. They have taken to social media and other sorts of media; radio, tv, and etc... My opinion on this, is that as religion, and more specifically in America, the Christian faith is fading from the public spotlight. Take Compassion International for example. They are a nonprofit Christian organization that helps people in need. You would most likely know them as the people who have ads on TV asking for a nickel a day to help feed a hungry child. This company helps fund missionary missions, other Christian based organizations and of course feeding and providing for people and kids in third world areas. They help spread their religion around the world through different ways by either funding missionary missions or helping people in poverty and teaching them of their faith. Compassion massed its wealth with the help of the media. They put ads on TV and other written publication asking for donations when they were starting out. They now utilize social media and other kinds of media to get the attention of investors or donators. Compassion International is just a small example of how religions are using social media to globalize. I think as long as we have media we will hear something about religion. I personally try to avoid religious media because to me it is propaganda and religions utilize that. For whatever reason unbeknownst to me, people tend to believe whatever comes from the media whether it is written, advertised, on the news, or even social media.
