Mastering Writing from Negative Experiences
Reading and writing are two very important skills that should be acquired in an individual’s lifetime. Great writing can be accomplished in many ways through process, focus, development, rhetorical strategies, and conventions. In this class, I have seen myself grow as a writer and as a critical thinker. Being able to read a magazine, article, book or internet source and to analyze it so that I can expand on the subject matter to give a clear and concise review through an essay is a very impressive task. You must be able to connect with your audience of educated peers and I think I have been able to do just that. I was given a homework assignment. I had to write a research paper on a topic of my choice. I chose to write about the Titanic. I was a very inexperienced writer at the time and I did not know how to write a rough draft, I didn’t know how to organize the paragraphs, and I wasn’t very good at grammar. This caused a major problem because I wasn’t sure where to start. I started writing my paper and citing my sources (which I wasn’t very good at either). It came time to turn it in and I thought I did a good job. I waited eagerly and patiently for the grades to post, like a lion waiting for its prey. Finally it came time to get the results! The grades were in and being passed down the aisle. As soon as I got my paper back, my eagerness and excitement slowly faded to disappointment and sadness. My paper was filled with red correction marks everywhere. I failed. This lowered my confidence in writing and I choose from then on to blow off all writing assignments all the way through high …show more content…
Although the assignments were challenging, it was a challenge that I was prepared to accept. I understand the basics of Process, Focus, Development, Rhetorical Strategies, and Conventions. I started to actually enjoy writing instead of dreading it. This is extremely helpful to me as it allows me to write a high quality academic essay. One of the main things that I learned was to read and think critically. Reading and thinking critically is an extremely important skill to have especially when writing a research paper. It is important to properly incorporate the information that was researched into your paper. Another very important thing that I learned was how to properly cite information. In EN105, that is something a lacked but now I feel confident and efficient at in text citations and works
