The pressure that school, no matter the level, puts on students is unhealthy. Students are stressed to the max trying to achieve certain goals set by society. Every student strives for a 4.0 GPA and a high score on standardized test, even though they go through great amounts of stress to feel they have reached those goals. We have all had one of those days. At 6:30 sharp, your alarm rings incessantly for you to drag yourself out of bed, get your clothes on, and get out bright and early for the bus to go to school. Then, you must find the willpower to stay awake in your morning classes, tests and homework included, until the lunch bell rings. This all happens because of the common school start time of around 7:50, but for some reason many schools, especially middle and high schools, are thinking of bringing this time to 7:15, leaving even less and less time for students to get ready. There may be some reasons why schools may want this, but the negative effects of this decision are undeniable.…

Changing high school start times is beneficial to student’s health and well being. Many teens only get 6-7 hours of sleep per night due to strenuous school work, although these teens need 8.5 to 9.5 hours of sleep per night. In many cases it is not easy for teens to get this much sleep because many teens are unable to fall asleep before 11pm out of habit. “Adolescents’ brains are wired to go to sleep late and wake up late, making it difficult for them to get a good night’s sleep before a 7:30 am first period class.” (Ingraham, Washington Post)…

Other high schools, such as Rockingham High School, do start at 8 a.m. so they can mostly relate to the struggle of being sleep deprived and driving to school and trying to stay awake after a night spent studying or doing homework. That is why high schools in America should adjust the start schedule to improve their students’ health, safety, and academic scores. Having the start time of schools rescheduled to a later time can positively affect students’ health.
