Cannabis is the scientific name of the commonly known drug, Marijuana. It appears naturally in tropical and humid parts of the earth. The use of Cannabis started in China in 2727 B.C. Greeks and Romans were also familiar with Marijuana. During 1545, the use of Cannabis spread to the western hemisphere where the people of Spain imported it to Chile to use it as a fibre. The number one disadvantage of Marijuana is that people say that it can cause injuries. These Injuries have a direct effect on the brain, lungs and one’s immune system. Marijuana also increases the risk of cancer and mental illness. Common side effects of marijuana include intense anxiety, fear, distrust and panic. A recent study by the Netherlands found that cannabis can increase the risk of depression for youth who are genetically vulnerable to mental illness. Long term use of Marijuana can lead to psychotic symptoms. Short term effects include increased heart rate, relaxed muscles, feeling drowsiness, and impaired memory. As a matter of fact, smoking marijuana for the first time can increase the risk of heart attack five times. School performance is greatly reduced due to lessened ability of solving problems. According to a research conducted by the National Institute on Drug abuse, people who have used Marijuana have a stronger tendency to try more addictive drugs. Therefore, Marijuana is often called the ‘Gateway Drug’. It leads to the addiction of other stronger drugs. Further as marijuana is called the “Gateway Drug” and people get addicted to it easily, if it is legalized in a country than more than half of the population of that country would be addicted to it, and as it is costlier than other drugs and people addicted to it can’t afford it if they are not so rich, it can lead to chaos and high rate of street crimes.
