Essay 2: The Impact of Social Media Social media has become a part of this generation like no other era has seen before. Studies and research has shown that teenagers all over America have a link to social media in some way or another. More specifically, the challenge, “A Day Without Media”, has shown a major dependency by college students on the use of cellphones, Twitter, Facebook, and media of every kind. By spending twenty four hours without social media, students suffer from a feeling of isolation, they realize how much the web impacts their connections, and from my own experience, created a realization of how much of social media has become an addiction.

Going twenty four hours without media was harder than expected. I went to a senior retreat where there was no service for two days, and absolutely no need for having a cell phone. Although I told myself I would try to last the weekend without touching my cellular device, I could not last more than a day. Like many of the college students in the study “A Day Without Media”, I found myself feeling false vibrations in my back pocket, and imagined my text notification go off several times. The hardest thing for me was not the Facebook or Twitter apps, but actually my spotify and looking at my photo gallery. I did not realize until that weekend how much I listened to music throughout my day, and how often I would look at my photo, perhaps as a way to feel connected with people I missed. This realization really opened my eyes to the fact that using social media has become second nature. I could not agree more with one of the comments made by another student in the “Day Without Social Media” challenge who said, “When I officially started the 24 hour period, I walked down the hallway of my dorm, and noticed that the rooms that I passed had TV’s blaring, music playing, computers being used for Facebook purposes, and at the end of the hallway someone was talking on the phone.
