Marriage Equality One of the most controversial topics in today’s media is same-sex marriage and the equal treatment of those in the LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender) community. I am in support of marriage equality for all people, regardless of their sexual orientation, because everyone should have the right to marry their significant other. The United States of America is the supposed “land of the free”, but in some states that statement is merely a phrase and not a practice. Many religious institutions protest gay marriage because they believe it threatens the sanctity of marriage. While religions should be allowed to have their own beliefs, the law should be objective. The legal system should not let personal or religious bias …show more content…
It does not matter what one believes about gay marriage, no one can ignore the enormous progress it has achieved in the past few years. However, this does not mean that all of the problems are solved. Many people still harass and hate all LGBT people while some simply tolerate them, but do not want the “homosexual agenda rubbed in their face”. Everybody is entitled to have their own opinion about marriage equality, but when the law does not allow homosexuals to have the exact same rights to marriage and their partner as heterosexuals do, then it is in fact, oppression. The law is supposed to be objective and unbiased and honestly, bias (whether it be religious or scientific) is the only thing stopping the entire world from legalizing marriage …show more content…
I will admit, this scientific-minded argument sounds logical, yet it does have some fallacy. I assume that because homosexual couples cannot produce children, natural selection sees them as “unfit”. First of all, the human population has billions of people and is essentially only growing, so homosexual marriages are not really a factor in this case. Second of all, gay marriage is legal in mostly developed countries, whose inhabitants have relatively comfortable lives, making natural selection also a non-issue. This bias seems to be rare but it is, nonetheless, still bias that should not be tolerated when making

In February of 2011 President Barrack Obama made a landmark declaration that he would no longer defend the Defense of Marriage Act. (Freedom to Marry 4) Under the logic that it was made unconstitutional by the equal protection clause. In the following February a group was created called the Human Rights Campaign the group had but a single goal; to get the Defense of Marriage Act repealed. By the end of the month the U.S. District Court ruled that a section of the Defense of Marriage Act was unconstitutional. On June 26, 2015, LBGT+ activist groups rejoiced as the United States Supreme Court ruled in favor of legalizing same-sex marriage believing that a ban of it violated the 14th amendment of the Constitution. This didn’t help stop any hatred of same-sex couples and it seemed that the world would implode due to the court’s decision However, backlash soon followed, leading to an Appeals court, saying it didn’t violate the 14th amendment and many “Christian” groups saying the ruling by the Supreme Court goes against the bible. In the case of Obergefell vs. Hodges, the ruling has influenced the United States to take steps in a more progressive future where everyone has equal rights and helping America begin its transition into a more positive light with supporting this decision. Much of the backlash from this decision was due to these different “Christian” activist groups who said that same-sex marriage went against their religious liberties and violated the bible in Leviticus. Which is quite hilarious as none of them probably adhere to the teaching in the book of Leviticus like no eating shellfish and no mixing different materials to wear like a cotton, polyester blend…

Gay marriage is indeed one of the most disputable issues that has been raging from the past till today. In truth, the issue of gay marriage is of utmost importance as it concerns individual rights, especially for the homosexual community. Since the last twentieth century, homosexuality has always been viewed with contempt and individuals are often discriminated or judged by their sexual orientation. In today’s modern world, the biggest advocates against gay marriage are perhaps the people of faith. With the moral beliefs that marriages support procreation, gay couples should never ever be given the right to marry as they are unable to have their own child like heterosexual partners could.…

Gay marriage has always been difficult for people to understand primarily being it goes against who we are as human beings; they fail to recognize what could be possible if people were to treat one another equally, instead all they take notice is people that will never be equal solely for the reason that they refuse to accept advancement. People oppose the Equal Rights Amendment since they fear what everyman secretly fears, adversity. Adversity is what keeps us as human beings in sync with each other without we cannot function. Gay people are human individuals just like everybody and have the unwritten right to love whoever they please. While many people are against homosexuality because of religious reasons, we live in a secular country, so our laws cannot be dictated by the teachings of a certain religion. Although “some religions don 't support same-sex marriage, others certainly do support it. The most fair and ethical approach—which treats all people equally regardless of religious affiliation—is to factor out religious points of view when crafting marriage laws within a secular context” (Lipp). Not only this, but the legalization of gay marriage would not infringe on a person’s religious right to disagree with it.…

When you think of marriage, you think about two people who love each other and who want a life together, which usually means having children, but some don't think of it the same way when it comes to same-sex marriage. In an article written by a conservative, named Trayce Hansen, she gives reasons to why love isn't enough, focusing on how children are better off raised by a married mother and father, but she is only portraying a single story on the issue, which can be further explained by Chimamanda Adichie, who has experienced being judged based on a single story all her life. The evidence out there can destroy this single story by showing that children of same-sex couples are not most likely to be mentally ill or become homosexual themselves. Why should marriage be limited to only heterosexuals anyway, with the divorce rate so high these days?…

Although I am not directly effected by same sex marriage, it is important for me to understand the implications of the decisions being made. Through attending the seminar last Thursday, my knowledge grew through the perspectives of Nicholas Wolterstorff and Matthew Tuininga. Even though they were both thoughtful in their remarks and research, I believe Wolterstorff's argument was more complete and organized. First of all, it was interesting how Wolterstorff prefaced his argument saying he began thinking homosexuality was wrong, with his views gradually changing since. His reason for this reversal was his interactions with his gay cousins he dearly loved, along with his father in law, and students that opened up to him about their realities.…

One of the groups that oppose the amendment are Marriage Matters, their website contains several stories of people of a wide diversity of gays and lesbians as to why they want to marry. The mission of Marriage Matters is to educate people on the fact that homosexuals desire to be married for the same reasons as heterosexuals want to be married and denying them that right is against their civil rights. Marriage Matters claims that “allowing same-sex couples to marry does not change the meaning of marriage. It simply allows same-sex couples to marry the person they love, to establish and protect a family and to make a lifetime commitment in the same way that other couples are able to”. Also, educating people on how the alternative ways of marriage don’t work since “Domestic Partnership and Civil Union laws still don’t qualify a spouse or children for health care coverage that employers only extend through marriage”.…

“If someone is gay and he searches for the Lord and has good will, who am I to judge?” asked Pope Francis during a news conference aboard the papal flight on its way back from Brazil, Monday, July 29, 2013. Pope Francis reached out to gays, saying he wouldn 't judge priests for their sexual orientation in a remarkably open and wide-ranging news conference as he returned from his first foreign trip. Why can’t you marry the love of your life? Why can’t you spend the rest of your life with a person you love legally? Why cant you wake up daily without begin judged?…

GAY, umm, that word was overused last week, I believe. As many of you know, by now, the U.S. Supreme Court legalized same-sex marriage in all fifty states and some of the conservatives are already planning on moving North, to Canada and some South, to Mexico, disregarding the fact that both countries legalized gay marriage way before the U.S. did--really? Yes, that 's what I thought, gaps and everything, but it seems Mexico is not as homophobic as its macho persona or rather stereotype seems to picture it. I don 't know about other states, but in New York the joy was overwhelming.…
