How Does Being Pregnant Affect Teenagers?

Starting my senior year of high school, I noticed that three students in my class are pregnant. How does being pregnant affect them? Teenagers can face multiple challenges during a pregnancy that include health concerns, family problems, judgment from peers and psychological issues. Lately, teen pregnancy is similar to riding a bike, a normal obstacle in life. Becoming pregnant before twenty, is an epidemic that is affecting teens throughout the world. In 2014, a total of 249,078 babies were born to women aged 15–19 years, for a birth rate of 24.2 per 1,000 women (CDC). The most important thing to do is have a healthy relationship with your parents because it can affect your way of thinking when it comes to being safe. Caring parents can greatly influence their children’s lives and the right decisions they make or simply a serious talk can certainly make the difference and prevent teenage pregnancy. Parents can talk to their child about abstinence, condoms, and a well-known talk called "The birds and the bees”, which is generally the event in most children 's lives in which the parents explain what sexual relationships are. If parents know their kids are engaging in premarital sex, they can encourage their children to use protection. Some teens think it is uncomfortable to talk to parents about urges about engaging in sexual intercourse. Also, the behaviors of teenagers depend on how their parents raise them, so accurate prevention of teenage pregnancy actually comes from them. Young people who spoke with their parents about condoms and contraception before they became sexually active were more likely to use protection when they did become sexually active (Advocates for Youth). A parent child connection can help young people to gain the knowledge, skills, and confidence to protect themselves when they do become sexually active. Parents can influence their decisions about sex more than friends
