Starting my senior year of high school, I noticed that three students in my class are pregnant. How does being pregnant affect them? Teenagers can face multiple challenges during a pregnancy that include health concerns, family problems, judgment from peers and psychological issues. Lately, teen pregnancy is similar to riding a bike, a normal obstacle in life. Becoming pregnant before twenty, is an epidemic that is affecting teens throughout the world. In 2014, a total of 249,078 babies were born to women aged 15–19 years, for a birth rate of 24.2 per 1,000 women (CDC). Unexpected teenage pregnancies are a challenge that gives young men and women difficult responsibilities. It is tough to balance school and raise a child while trying to have a social life. Raising a child when you are young, you have to understand that motherhood involves providing financially and emotionally for an infant. The consequences are not just pregnancy, but STD’s can be contracted during unprotected sex. Your body changes and a lot of temptations are present such as premarital sex. Teens do not know the life changing experience of getting pregnant and the effects it has. Teenagers will make their own decisions, but to make sure their safe is by contraceptives, abstinence, and having a positive relationship with your parents. These important factors can reduce the rate of adolescents having babies at an early age. Teenage girls do not realize the long-term consequences of pregnancy and child bearing, so having knowledge of them can help. Even if teens are going to still engage in sex, making sure they are safe while doing it can help prevent pregnancy.
