Violent Video Games: Positive Or Negative Ways?

Video games have been very controversial when it comes to human behavior and mental stability. Video games have evolved tremendously since they were first introduced. There are several questions that arise when focusing on human behavior when it comes to video games. Two questions in particular are, “Do video games impact behavior is negative ways? and “Do video games effect human behavior. Several different theories were explored in the journal article “Brains on video games”. Six experts shared their research on the positive and negative ways video games can effect the way people think and behave. All of the researchers seem to come to the same conclusion that video games have no negative impacts on the brain or behavior. Bavelier and Green (2011), state that violent video games alone cannot effect behavior in a violent ways. Each person is different and some things may influence some people in different ways. Han and Renshaw (2011) gave great examples on how addictive video gaming turned some of its user to having violent behavior. One example given was a mother who was addicted to online gaming chocked her two year old son, and a thirteen year old who beat his mother to death for commenting on his time spent on video games. Though these cases are real life incidences, each case of addicted online gaming will not lead to these drastic measures in all individuals. Merzenich (2011) concludes that some children may simply be bored in regular settings which cause them to react in negative ways. Merzenich states that playing video games can take away from school work and outdoor activities with can lead to some antisocial behavior. The use of violent video games can lead to gamers becoming less empathetic towards real life situations. Gentile (2011) suggests that whatever we practice over and over effects the brain. Han and Renshaw (2011) came to the conclusion that some games can be more addictive than other. They compared gaming addictions to those with other addictions such as drug addiction. People who have addictions have some type of dysfunctions in five domains which include academic, social, occupational, developmental and behavioral. Also, those who are said to have gaming addictions showed that their daily routines were interrupted because of game play. They would not have nutritious meals and would neglect their hygiene and were said to be very irritable. Some gamers even had trouble obtaining a job because of their intensive game play. Merzenich (2011) concluded that 1 in 5 young adults would meet the criteria of being addicted to gaming. Gentile (2011) states that people who are addicted to games face the same problems that one who is addicted to drugs would face. Drug and alcohol users aren’t labeled to be addicted just by what they do, but how excessively they engage in the action.
