What is veganism? You may think that veganism is nothing more than a diet, but really it’s a lifestyle. Most people would say that veganism simply means you don’t eat meat, dairy, or eggs, but that’s only part of it. The idea of being vegan is to lessen the exploitation and cruelty to animals whenever possible, whether that be for food, clothing, or other products such as makeup that is tested on animals. Animal agriculture also has a significant negative impact on the environment. Having or incorporating more of a vegan lifestyle is beneficial to our health, animals, and the environment.

Beans, nuts, nut butters, soy products, and lentils are all some healthy ways to get plenty of protein on a vegan diet. The diet is high in vitamins and nutrients like folate, vitamin C, and vitamin E. People on vegan diets often notice positive change in skin, hair, and nails. With all of these health benefits come more energy, healthier body mass index, and several studies even show that people following a vegan or vegetarian lifestyle live three to six years longer than people who do not. Most people don’t realize what we eat has such an impact on our Earth and the people in it. Two of the issues with livestock is that it takes 2,500 gallons of water and twelve pounds of grain to produce only one pound of beef. 80-90% of US water is used for agriculture and over half of the U.S. grain is being fed to livestock instead of being used for direct human consumption, and animal agriculture is one of the leading causes of world hunger. Animal agriculture is also responsible for 91% of amazon destruction and has an extremely negative impact on climate change. The documentary Cowspiracy says “Animal Agriculture is responsible for 18% of greenhouse gas emissions. More than the combined exhaust from all transportation.” (Andersen, Kip and Kuhn, Keegan. Cowspiracy. CD-ROM. 2014.) Cowspiracy also touches on the fact that livestock is responsible for 65% of nitrous oxide emissions which has 296 times more impact on the environment than carbon dioxide. A recommended documentary for more information and facts about the negative impact of animal agriculture is Cowspiracy. Every single person can make a difference and lessen their carbon footprint.
