He wanted to keep women “where they belong” so that the home would not be ruined with politics. This directly pertains to the last point, that people believed the suffrage would break up the home. Women were being blamed for destroying families for wanting a say in their government. This voice of one politician is offensive to an entire movement. Although this was just one person’s view, there was an entire organization created to oppose female suffrage. The National Association Opposed to Woman Suffrage was founded in 1911 (“National Association Opposed to Woman Suffrage” NP). The suffragists had an entire group against them, just for trying to get the right to vote. The association even went as far as to making a pamphlet on the reasons why women should not be allowed to vote. One of their reasons was, “BECAUSE 90% of the women either do not want it, or do not care. (Barkhorn NP)” They are claiming that only 10% of women wanted to vote. With that many women in this movement, it’s very inconsiderate to say that most women don’t even want to vote. This basically told them their whole movement was useless and that could feel quite hurtful to the people fighting every single day. Women worked extremely hard for this movement, for Susan B. There were many negative aspects of the movement, although its overall goal was very positive and progressive for the time period. The marriages of suffragists were greatly damaged by the movement and lost the women their citizenship. There were also many people against them, telling them they should stay home where they belong, slowing down their process of getting their rights, and making it seem as though their movement was useless. Many suffragists were arrested and put in jail as well, putting the women through horrible conditions as well as changing the suffragists’ lives forever.
