Effects Of Lowering The Drinking Age To 18

Every eighteen year old at some point has had the thought of tasting an alcoholic beverage. Is it a good idea? No not at all. Little do we know, our brains are still developing at the age of eighteen. It is scientifically proven that the rational part of a teenager’s brain is not fully developed, and will not be until he or she reaches the age of twenty five. Which is why recent studies show that an adults brain works quite different than that of a teenagers. Which means that alcohol can have many different negative effects on a developing brain. Given just that little piece of information, many of us would think that the legal drinking age should go up to twenty five, instead of lowering back to the age eighteen. If the legal drinking age is raised to twenty five, it may cause less brain damage due to under age drinking. As a teenager everyone is a target of peer pressure. In the United States of America, eleven percent of the alcohol consumed is by young people between the ages of twelve and twenty years old. It is also believed that those in this age range drink more alcohol than an adult does. As a college student I can agree with this statement. There are some people that feel as if they are not drunk that they are not capable of having a good time with their friends, which is ridiculous. In society drinking is looked upon as a stress reliever. Something to get rid of the pain that life causes. It’s a rebellious act from teenagers. Lowering the drinking age to eighteen may also raise the risk of people drinking and driving. Which is a positive correlation between accidents caused by drunk drivers. So that means that we could be looking forward to more deaths which is not a good idea, or something that any family should go through
