By: Kelli Floyd The Crusades had a massive impact on the development of Western civilization. The interaction between Christian Europe and the Muslims had many benefits to Europe. On the flipside, its interaction with Christianity had very negative impact on Islamic culture. An argument can be made to say that the Crusades may have caused Islam to enter into a downward spiral from which it still has not been able to recover.
How Islam Benefited Europe
Although the Crusades turned out badly in generally for much of Christian Europe, there were some changes that benefitted development. One thing that was traditionally thought of as Medieval European is chivalry. Although this is often thought of as something Christian in origin, it is actually Islamic in origin. Something else that was learned from the Crusades is medicine. Of course, the Christians knew medicine already, but their medical training were far behind that of the Muslims. The Muslims had a man named Ibn Sinna who wrote a medical text that was used for many years after his death in training future doctors. Another man named Ibn Rushd had a very large influence on philosophy and learning. He can be linked to the resurgence in interest in Aristotle in Europe, and his influence was felt in universities much later.
How Christianity Damaged Islam The Crusades had a very strong effect on the Muslims. They became afraid of Christians, which ended up spreading to their view of all Europeans. When the Christians began the Holy War, and they captured Jerusalem and anywhere else they could, they committed terrible acts of cruelty. This caused the Muslims to form various alliances with different groups in order to fight the Crusaders. The Crusades had a damaging effect on many aspects of Islam. One of the reactions that they Muslims had was coining the term ‘jihad’, which is a word that you still hear used today. It was started by a leader of Islam named Zengi.
