The sun and its rays can be just as harmful as it is beneficial. Sunlight is needed for Vitamin D and energy, but the sun also produces Ultraviolet-A (UVA) and Ultraviolet-B (UVB) rays that can harm the body. Even though the sun’s rays can do damage to the body, many Americans choose to tan. According to skincancer.org, nearly 30 million Americans choose to tan indoors with the use of tanning beds. Like the sun, tanning beds also produce harmful UV-A and UV-B rays. Ultraviolet (UV) radiation from tanning beds can have many negative effects on the body and can even cause cancer.
One of the effects of using a tanning bed is eye problems. Although most tanning salons offer goggles to help protect the tanner’s eyes, wearing goggles is not required

Although many young people use tanning beds because they think they look better with a tan, what they don’t realize is that the UV rays will actually have a negative effect on their looks down the road. The UV radiation from tanning beds can cause fine lines and wrinkles, blotchiness, and for their skin to sag. It can also cause changes in skin texture causing the skin to have a leathery texture. According to the CDC, skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States, with more than 3.5 million skin cancers being diagnosed annually. Exposure to UV radiation from tanning beds increases the risk of developing skin cancer. In 2009, the World Health Organization even bumped up tanning beds from “probably carcinogenic to humans” to “carcinogenic to humans”. Basal cell carcinoma (BCC), squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and melanoma are all skin cancers that have been linked to UV radiation from tanning beds. BCC is an abnormal and uncontrolled growth or lesion that forms in the skin’s basal cells. These growths or lesions often look like red patches, open sores, or pink growths. Most of the time BCCs never spread to other parts of the body, but in rare cases it can spread to other parts of the body and become life threatening. SCC is an uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells that forms in the skin’s squamous cells. Like BCC, SCCs often look like open sores and red patches. SCCs can also look like warts and may also crust or bleed. Melanoma is the most dangerous form of skin cancer. Melanoma often looks like a mole and some even form from moles. However, sometimes melanoma can be skin colored, pink, purple, red or white. These cancerous growths develop in the body when DNA in skin
