Online social networking have gained astounding growth and become prominence in today’s world which leading in drawing and attracting people’s attention from all around the world. According to various research and studies in the field of online social networks, teenagers or adolescents is the most common users of these social networking. Hence, based on a national survey in 2009, 73% of online teenagers are currently Social Network Site (SNS), which is an increase from 55% from the past years (Lenhart, Purcell, Smith, & Zickuhr, 2010). Furthermore, the use of social networking sites is rising at a great rate and somehow has become a part of the important aspect in generation today’s life especially the adolescents. These social networking sites such as Twitter and Facebook have become a raging craze for everyone nowadays. It is accessible from any electronic gadget such as phone, laptop, tablet and others with an internet connection. This is clearly seen that, it is easy for anyone including children as young as 8 or 9 years old to connect to a social media site at anywhere and anytime (Ahn, 2011). However, although social networking has many benefits for users, it also can have some adverse effect especially for the adolescents such as affecting one’s physical and mental health, affecting one’s behaviour and also adolescents may become the victims of social media’s misuse and …show more content…
This is because an easier and faster Internet access at universities may also enhance the risk of university students or mostly adolescents getting involved with the negative effects of the social network sites (Strasburger, et.al., 2003). Furthermore, social networking site plays a negative role on today’s society by continuously putting users of social media in danger, limiting face to face socializing skills, exposing our society to explicit materials and not to forget, it may lead to cybercrime. Hence, adolescents are becoming the main victims of social networks more often than anyone else. Thus, bad things about social media need to change as there needs to be more restrictions of blocking access to unappreciated sites and also security needs to drastically tighten the social media privacy from being misuse and fraud. Not only that, parents and government should also take their own initiatives
