Socialization is defined as the lifelong process of inheriting and disseminating norms, customs, values and ideologies, providing an individual with the skills and habits necessary for participating within society. Sites such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram have made it possible for people to connect with old friends and make new ones, it helps people share ideas, participate in organizations, and join causes of their choosing. With the growing use of social media and the ease of accessibility, there is the question of the impact it is having on socialization. New media not only influences the form and content of information/messages but it also effects how people understand each other in the process of human communication, especially for those from different cultural or ethnic groups. [22] With the explosion of the use of social media as a primary source of communication there are worries that society is failing to make use of person-to-person interaction. A January 2012 Center for the Digital Future at USC Annenberg school study found that the percentage of people reporting less face-to-face time with family in their homes rose from 8% in 2000 to 34% in 2011.[20] We have heard repeatedly not to believe everything we read online, social media can enable the spread of false information. 49.1% of people have reported hearing false news via social media. False rumors spread in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy when someone tweeted that the New Your Stock exchange was flooding and that the power company would cut off all electricity to Manhattan; the bogus information was picked up by the national news outlets including CNN and the Weather Channel. Numerous of studies have proven the impact of cyberbullying is more severe than traditional bullying. [29] Cyberbullying victimization has been associated with symptoms of social anxiety, depression, suicidal ideation, low self-confidence, decline in school grades and school attendance, and negative impact on family relationships. [29] As of September 2014 forty-nine states and the District of Columbia have put anti-bullying legislations in place. Furthermore, to increase the awareness among the public many have started nonprofit campaigns and schools begun taking the necessary steps to prevent
