Negative Effects Of Social Media On Driving

Social media has negatively affected the safety of driving for a variety of reasons. The ways that this has occurred is through an increase of teenage drivers on the road, an increase in the number of social media sites, and general distraction. As the years have gone on, more teenagers and young people have been owning cars and driving places, instead of having parents or public transportation get them there. Additionally, smartphone usage has increased over the past couple years as well. These two increases have caused an increase in the danger of driving. Generally, young people are worse at driving because they have less experience than older people. But, the distracted driving causes people not to notice red lights or drastic changes in the speed limits or yield signs. Not noticing someone stopping or going faster to cut you off could cause a major accident, where either the driver or the driver in the other car is seriously injured, or someone’s family member or friend is injured. Additionally, when people are distracted while driving they can not see someone J-walking, biking, or on motorcycles, due to the people being much smaller than the cars, and cause a major accident. Maybe even killing someone. Overall, social media has negatively impacted the safety of the roads. One more problem with driving and social media is that the people walking or biking can be distracted by social media. These people can dart out into the street while on social media when they didn’t notice a car. Also, many people try to get this “perfect shot” of someone sitting in the middle of the street for many of the social media sites. These two things can either cause a car to directly hit you and cause a serious accident, possibly death or paralysis.
