Use of Social Media by College Students Relationship to Communication and Self Concept

Even though social media represents a great way to link and communicate people all over the world, it can also ruin the lives of those who do not know how to use it adequately; mental health problems, time management , and vanity in college students’ lives are some of the negative aspects that social media cause to its users. these days social media is the a innovation and sensation to which everyone want to have access. Whenever I am waiting for the bus, walking to my class or just pay attention to the people around me, I just see slaves and addicts to social media. the question is why does social media has become so important to those who use it everyday.

Heavy social media users are usually more likely to show poor psychological mental health, and this will certainly lead those heavy users to suffering from stress and anxiety, which can greatly affect college students’s lives, academic development, and the ability to socialize with friends.”Kevin Eagan, the program 's director, believes that the increase in stress and mental health disorders in students today is directly influenced by the decline of face-to-face socializing”(Kang). Social media can be used for lots of different things; and different people use it for different sobject of those things. “ Researchers think that what matter the most is how frequently Facebook users compare themselves to other people; An inevitable human tendency that’s been known to lead to unhappiness”(Singal). Jesse Singal states that a recent study in the Journal of Sciences and Clinical Psychology a team lead by Mai-Ly N. showed them that Facebook, happiness, and social comparison are related to each other . They discovered that the more time a student spends on Facebook, the more depressive symptoms they experienced( Singal).“Both studies provide that people feel depressed after spending a great deal of time on Facebook because they feel badly when comparing themselves to others”(Singal). Social media in general can cause unhappiness to those who are heavy users. Everyone has felt envy of something or someone at some point. Facebook as an example of social media, can be a useful tool to communicate with family; however, many college students use it most of the time use it to see who is in a relationship, pictures, status, or even how well a friend may be doing financially.
