The negative impact of the use of social networking and technology on society is a very broad topic that incorporates many different points of interest, including bullying, employment, education, relationships, and communication. Social media and technology both play an immense and rapidly increasing role in today’s society, which is especially evident among the younger generations. The twenty-first century is known as the “app generation,” due to the fact that technology is steadily starting to carry out more and more of the tasks and aspects of people’s daily lives. It is a tool used by people all around the world, yet statistics show it might be doing more harm than good in society because it is causing early and negative side effects. An analysis of the misusage of technology and social media in today’s world reveals harmful and drastic consequences, such as a lack of interpersonal skills, decreased productivity in school and work, possibly fatal health problems, and depression caused by bullying. Social media is one of the leading causes of cyberbullying in today’s society because children and young adults can simply hide behind social media accounts and assume they can say whatever they want, without consequences. A shocking 43% of teens age thirteen to seventeen report that they have experienced some sort of cyberbullying in the past year, and more than one in three young people have experienced cyber threats online; well over half of young people do not tell their parents when cyber bullying occurs to themselves, but also to their peers ("Cyberbullying Statistics").
