It has been said that “Life is what happens when your cell phone is charging”. In the modern world cell phones have a notable impact on the lives of people everywhere. Cell phones, specifically smartphones, are versatile devices that are useful in many aspects of one’s daily life. A smartphone can be used for navigation, communication, and entertainment. However, too many people are only aware of the positives that have been provided by technological advances which make smartphones such convenient devices and are oblivious to the negatives that coincide. Although smartphones are generally perceived as beneficial devices, the fact of the matter is that they are actually poor investments. The device that was once solely used for making phone calls when away from a landline has evolved into perhaps the most influential technological device in history. Smartphones are popular amongst multiple demographics, from children who have only recently learned their first words to elderly citizens. The uses for smartphones are endless as there millions of applications that can help simplify almost all aspects of one’s life or quite simply provide one with entertainment. With nearly any topic one can think of there is most likely an application associated with the subject matter. A few examples of popular use of smartphones include navigation, video games, social media, and everyday applications such as “Weather” and “Reminders”. People all over the world seek to posses the most up to date, and in many cases the best, mobile phone available. And it is because of this that there is an immense amount of resources that go into the creation of new smartphone innovations, which leads to the annual release of new phones. If one opens up a web page or is watching a television program it is likely that one will see at least one advertisement relating to a new smartphone. Each and every advertisement is aiming to convince the consumer that their product is superior to the rest. However, their versatility has caused users to become dependant on their devices. This dependence has lead to situations in where one cannot complete a simple task such as finding directions to a destination, which was once a common practice, without help from a navigation application from their phone. According to the article “The Truth About Smartphone Addiction” 404 college students were surveyed and it was discovered that 67% of them feel that they need their phone at all times (Bell et al.). It is a frightening thought that the future population of multiple countries cannot live without access to their phones. In a scenario where a smartphone, or even internet connection, is unavailable an overwhelming amount of people would feel helpless. This is worrisome because smartphones have only been around for a little less than a decade and generations before functioned perfectly well without them. In the article “How Your Smartphone Is Harming Your Health” the authors informs that, “A 2011 study found that unplugging completely for 24 hours can result in physical and mental withdrawal symptoms, such as fidgeting and feelings of anxiety and isolation” (Gregoire).
