Smartphone Technology and its Effects on the Christian Environment

Smartphones has provided people with push and pull technology that allows them to receive mounds of information like breaking news alerts, urgent messages from children, and video messages to long distance family members. Along with the positives of smartphone technology there are negatives also that follow. Convenience, the key factor behind most of the features offered through smartphones, is tempting users to use their phones where they shouldn’t such as the car or at the dinner table. Rather than use it responsibly some are using their smartphones recklessly. One (2015) Newsweek magazine article reported a survey by AT&T showing 61% of its respondents admitting to texting while driving, making videos while driving, and checking emails behind the wheel. 1 Corinthians 6:12 in the Bible states, “ ‘All things are lawful for me,’ but not all things are helpful. All things are lawful for me, but I will not be enslaved by anything.” What this means is that while a person may be exposed to and permitted to do such things, that doesn’t mean that those things will be of benefit to that person. Nor does that mean a person should over indulge and allow such things to consume them.
