How Does Sex Affect Teens

Superior Essays
Today more than ever teens are being influenced by the media. Specifically, teens are being increasingly exposed to sex on television. Top teen shows on television, such as “Shameless”, “Gossip Girl”, and “One Tree Hill”, are exposing teens to many sexual behaviors and comments at an early age. The amount of sexual behaviors and comments that appeared on the three shows previously mentioned were coded with the type of comment or behavior shown, the age of the character participating in the act/comment, and the gender of the character participating in the act/comment taken into consideration. This was done to get a better understanding of how sex is actually portrayed on teen television shows. The article “Adolescents, Sex, and the Media: Ooooo, Baby, Baby - a Q & A” by Victor C. Strasburger addressed many of the facts surrounding sex in the media and adolescents’ exposure to it. For the most part, the article was leaning towards sex in the media being a bad influence for teens. However, …show more content…
The most frequent type of sexual comment made by males and females was general sexual innuendos, however, males made more sexual innuendos than females (6 versus 3). Even though both sexes had the same most frequent type of sexual comment, males made comments of a sexual nature about a person’s body or appearance and sexist remarks or sexual slurs about the nature of women or men more than females who did not make either of those types of comments. Again, not surprising with today’s sexist culture. For example, in the show “Gossip Girl”, Chuck made a sexist remark to Serena who’s friend rejected him. He screamed, “Your life is over, slut!” When sexist comments and derogatory terms such this are consistently shown on the media, adolescents start to think that it is okay to say those types of hurtful things and consequently sexism

I found this to be pleasantly surprising and potentially beneficial to adolescents because I expected there to be none. This is important because The Social Learning Theory states that adolescent’s behaviors will be learned vicariously though observation and modeling of others. So, sexual risks and responsibilities concerns are very important to address. This shows that the overall pattern of the series involves some attempt to increase awareness regarding sexual health concerns and/or serious outcomes that can be a result of sexual activity. Something that could be harmful however to adolescents is how often sex is displayed on the show.…

The men and women of America constantly reference and utilize sexist stereotypes of modern day society. We cannot completely blame our current day society for this abundance of sexism. Many of these ridiculous notions are passed down generationally or simply learned from watching our parents or elders in the community. Children began to pick up on these gender identities set up by society at a young age. Feminine and masculine attributes are generally viewed as opposites.…

Sexy Soap, Spirits, and Salad Sex sells! This is a distasteful but accurate statement. There is a great deal of sexuality in the media today that cannot be avoided. There are many times when I am casually scrolling though twitter or flipping through channels and an ad pops up that is extremely sexual. Businesses have found a way to make their product more desirable through this type of portrayal, and they are not going to change that anytime soon.…

Every generation has a film, book, or a television show that defines its adolescents. On the surface the themes are the same: sex, drugs and self-discovery. As a person starts to pick apart certain films one realizes that there is a lot of hidden lessons. In the 1980’s, Fast Times at Ridgemont High was a film that pushed the boundaries. As a teen comedy it deals with many different issues that teens found themselves dealing with.…

APPENDIX C: STAKEHOLDER ANALYSIS WRITERS AND EDITORS Those who produce BuzzFeed’s content would be most severely affected by a position on the sexual objectification of men/women. An official position means they would be more limited in terms of the content they can produce. Writers may have their own personal views on the issue, but would be obligated to follow company policy. BuzzFeed’s current Editorial Standards and Ethics Guide currently states “nudity or sex should be avoided if it’s prurient or pornographic” and that for a number of issues, including women’s rights, “there are not two sides”.…

Reality TV has been around since the late 1940’s when Allen Funt headlined a show called Candid Camera. This was followed in 1950 with a show named Truth or Consequences. The 1970’s had programs called Real People and That’s Incredible. These shows were, for the most part, considered wholesome entertainment that the entire family could watch and were quite tame in comparison to what is on television today. Reality TV exploded in the 2000’s and it remains one of the most popular genres in television.…

In our society today, there are still many techniques of discrimination that one would think had been eradicated years ago. One of these techniques is sexism, which is the act of prejudice, stereotyping, and/or intolerance on the basis of gender. Sexism has taken control over the way people think and it affects the job industry, government decisions, the media, and unfortunately, education. Children begin to experience sexism at a young age, typically in elementary school. An example of a subliminal sexist message that they might experience would be a teacher scolding a female student for acting in an unorthodox fashion that does not fit the ‘calm, respectful, and neat’ stereotype for girls, but then excusing the same actions of a male student, using the overused, disgusting statement ‘boys will be boys.’…

In popular fictional television shows, characters that happen to be teen mothers are always depicted as irresponsible and bad mothers. These characters are always blamed for their pregnancy. The negative stereotypes depicted in these shows can lead society to believe that all teen mothers are irresponsible and bad mothers, which is an assumption that can affect how the teen mothers are treated. In order to erase the negative stereotype about teen mothers, television producers should cease to use teen mothers as entertainment devices until they can properly portray them in the media.…

Gender roles in the media influence society greatly. Media has the ability to portray genders in ways that they really do not act in real life and American society. Even with reality shows, individuals in the shows put on an act in a way to persuade the audience’s mind to keep them watching. For this assignment I chose to watch two different shows that were on ABC Family. I was quick to learn that the “family channel” is not so much for the family.…

Another negative influence should be emphasized here. Materialism stimulated by some reality shows threats adolescents’ concept of money, leading them to be greedy. Many reality TV shows have set up huge bonuses to encourage contestants. As a consequence, to get bonuses seems to be the only goal for them to participate in the programme. For example, the ultimate winner of Big Brother (a popular reality show in the UK) won a £70,000 prize in 2000, and Survivor ( an American reality show) arranged up to $1 million prize to the champion (The Telegraph,2000; BBC, 2000).…

Major Writing Assignment Three: The Comparison Between a Press Article and an Academic Research Article on the Effects of Teenage Sex The original claim from the popular press article “Teenage sex ‘leads to bad moods’ later in life” By Ted Thornhill was that having sexual intercourse during teenage years will lead to the negative effects on the person as they age, such as the change of size of reproductive organs and a negative effect on brain development. During the first evaluation of this popular press article, I was skeptical and did not believe that it was a credibility article after analyzing the amount of evidence provided and where the article was posted. After carefully rereading the article by Thornhill and the research article that…
