“Young people are using new technologies at ever-increasing rates, with 93 percent of young people now online, 73 percent on MySpace or Facebook, and 75 percent owning cell phones, up from 63 percent owned cellphones in 2006”, according to data from the American Psychological Association. Screened technology does negatively influence children because it hinders their brain’s ability to mature properly. People need to see that cell phones should be diligently monitored when in the hands of adolescents to avoid attention disorders, distractions, and internet harassment. Studies have shown that excessive media use can lead to attention problems, school difficulties, and sleep and eating disorders (PsychAlive 2014). Children’s social intelligence skills are at great risk. With all the time spent on technology, it is harming their ability to develop socially. “Mindfulness describes mental state awareness. Mindfulness helps people to live more in the moment at a slower pace, with less stress and improved overall health. If [electronics are] taking [children] away from connection, then we may be raising a far less mindful generation, a more self-centered, narcissistic, easily bored generation” (PsychAlive 2014). In an article titled, “Don’t Give Mobile Phones to Under- 8s”, the National Radiological Association Board summarizes that cell phones actually cause brain damage. This study reveals that there is scientific evidence of biological effects occurring exposure to radiation from cell phones. The radiation levels cell phones emit shows to be high. Also, in an article titled, “Is Your Technology Hurting Kids”, it argues that children constantly divert their time and attention to their cell phone.
