School Uniforms : Are they the best for students? Are uniforms really the best for students attending public schools? Many parents and educators believe that mandatory school uniforms are the best for their learners. Even though there are some benefits to uniforms, such as reducing distractions and saving time, there are many negative effects that arise due to school uniforms. Uniforms in the U.S. began in 1987, 31 years ago, in Washington DC and Maryland due to a shooting in 1986 where a public school student was injured during a fight over $95 sunglasses. According to Procon.org “the first amendment of the U.S. Constitution guarantees that all individuals have the right to express themselves freely”. This quote states that people should have the ability to express themselves anywhere in the country. The United States government gives the people the right to express themselves freely. which we cannot be denied of amendment. Implementing mandatory uniforms will only take away this right and students. Uniforms may limit students’ clothing choices, but there are other alternatives to self expression, such as wearing accessories and doing their hair in a certain way. Even with school uniforms, students’ right to free expression is still intact as some educators and parents believe. Though a message is sent to student that youngsters can and will be confined and restrained on what they can and cannot wear to school, which will cause some students to feel boxed and restricted while wearing uniforms at school. For students that are a member of the LGBTQ community, they might feel like uniforms are barriers for them. Genderfluid and transgender students may feel that they do not feel comfortable wearing uniforms that are based off of their born sex, which they may not identify themselves as. They can help preserve money for parents and some believe that the decision for mandatory school uniforms is not up to students. Some low-income parents have trouble affording new uniforms every couple of months for their growing learners.
