Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is a psychiatric disorder that affects 3 to 5% of children. Misdiagnoses have caused doctors to overprescribe Ritalin, which is a central nervous system stimulant that helps with hyperactivity and impulse control. The Ritalin can also cause negative effects towards the human body. The Ritalin is never to be shared with anyone, especially with a history of drug abuse. Never use Ritalin improperly because it could lead to serious death or injury. Children who develop Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder have family issues, a significant amount of impaired function and absolutely more symptoms. Doctors know the drug affects other children differently, therefore they want to help the children in other curable ways. Cognitive and behavioral therapy is used to change the pattern of the way children think. The children do have the power to overcome the drug. Cognitive and behavioral therapy allows the child to become aware of their surroundings. David Gratzer and Faiza Khalid-Khan, both expresses that “CBT has been developed and tested in different forms for many psychiatric diseases” (Canadian Medical Association Journal). The children increase in knowledge and they are able to help themselves through hard times. “CBT isolates specific problems, and a therapist helps the patient to develop strategies to address those problems by changing thinking patterns and behaviors” (CMAJ). Psychology specialist help these children make their own choices and families believe that this tool helps children with mental disorders such as (ADHD). Due to the circumstances, the child is really not the one making the decision. The parent of the child are the ones who decide whether the child should take therapy classes. Therapy could be an advantage or a disadvantage depending on how they respond to a psychology specialist. However, CBT is not the only help with the illness. If parents want to help the child then it is really up to the parents. Parents should know to be with the child at all times. The parents should be able to feed them and take care of them at all times. Instead of having the child taking drugs for (ADHD) the parents should be able to calm their children down with other methods of curing. “The author began with her own challenges -- controlling her children 's behavior, monitoring their diet, giving them a shot at ‘normality ' and trying to lessen their embarrassment over special food and sense of deprivation or of being ‘different.’” (Wood 1992). Every parent should know what their child is going through because the world is not safe. Other children might not know what other children with (ADHD) go through. There are children that harass children with mental disorders. The parents should be aware of the child 's surroundings. If the parents are the ones taking care of the child with (ADHD), they know whats going on with them and what they do for a living. The parents are more comfortable taking care of their children themselves because they don 't want to have prescribed drugs offered to their child. Parents have the power over all over their child, therefore it is up to the parent’s decision what to do with their child.
