The internet is a network where any computer can link to information stored in it. The internet is almost everywhere and makes communication and information more accessible. The internet is used in school for students, at work, to play online games, and so on. Knowing that the internet is being used so much show how much time is being spent on it. With the amount of time spent on the net, also known as the “Internet,” the human brain is slowly changing resulting in disturbing thoughts. Without notice, the human brain is being reconstructed all because of the dependence people have on the internet. The constant use of the net is changing the brain and the way people think. Let us rewind back to when nobody had access to the internet because it was not invented. People relied on libraries, books, and journals. Nicholas Carr discusses how life is difficult to imagine without the World Wide Web (Carr, 2010). The internet affects how people think, read and remember. When a book is being read, information is being retained and can register into an individual’s long term memory. People can really analyze the text and the material read. With the internet, articles that are read online are skimmed briefly and are quickly forgotten because they register into the short term memory. So many distractions occur while browsing and reading on the internet. People are distracted and interrupted and personalities are hindered. On analytical tests and intelligent tests, Individuals who use the web perform worse than those who do not. The poor performance is due to the impairment of cognitive skills. Information that is absorbed is soon forgotten because it cannot be retained (Brain, 2010). The results are an internet-related side effect. “Google is making us stupid and intelligent at the same time,” (Whitney, 2010). Experts discuss that Google makes people intellectually lazy.
